Enhanced Efforts in Elephant Conservation and Human-Wildlife Coexistence by KWS

This year, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has intensified its conservation initiatives, particularly for elephants, by collaborating more closely with various partners. A key boost to these efforts came in May when KWS received a generous donation of vehicles valued at over $400,000 from the Shiraz and Leili Wildlife Foundation. This fleet will greatly support the KWS Vet and Capture Unit, which is vital for the capture, relocation, and restocking of wildlife in both protected and unprotected areas.

KWS Director General, Dr. Erastus Kanga, highlighted that these vehicles will enhance the unit’s ability to manage wildlife populations and improve conservation outcomes.

In addition to these efforts, KWS also launched the National Human-Wildlife Coexistence (HWC) Strategy and Action Plan 2024-2033 in March. This comprehensive plan is designed to foster peaceful coexistence between humans and wildlife across the country. It focuses on five key areas: land and space management, innovative conflict mitigation, capacity building, institutional reforms, and enhancing the wildlife economy and compensation mechanisms.

KWS remains committed to these goals and emphasizes that success relies on collaborative efforts and innovative strategies from all stakeholders in the conservation sector. The Karen Blixen Group is proud to support these efforts, ensuring sustainable wildlife conservation for future generations.
